Michelle Sowemimo - International Student

(Class of 2007)

I was born Michelle Olufunmito Olubumi Iyabode Sowemimo. I look African, speak Chinese have a British/Australian accent and enjoy eating Filipino food. I was born in London, United Kingdom. I am ethnically Nigerian however was raised partly in Melbourne, Australia and partly in Beijing, China. My family currently lives in Manila, Philippines. Two and a half years ago I arrived in Durham, North Carolina to attend college here at Duke.
Moving to the states really challenged my notions of identity. Even while I was in China I never really thought of myself as “unique” or “international” because at the international school I went to everyone had a similar story to tell. Third culture Kids, we called ourselves. However, here at Duke most everyone I meet could answer the question “Where are you from” in less than two sentences. I, however, cannot identify with just one country. Each and every country I have lived in has had a significant impact on the person I am today. Helping others understand my background will not only shatter stereotypes but expand horizons. For so long, we have placed those different than ourselves in the “other” category, however, a time is coming when the “us” and “them” mentality will have to change.
