“You can never truly know your own culture until you leave it, or fully experience one different than your own.” I definitely recognize this as true today. I was born in Chennai, India and moved to England at the age of 1. I lived in England for three years and learned to speak there. Because of this, and since my immediate family has always been comfortable with English, it is certainly the language I am most comfortable with. I moved back to India and grew up there for the better part of 14 years. On a whim, I then decided to come to the US for college and have been here for the past 6 years. During my time here in the US I have truly experienced what means to be multi-cultural. As an Indian that does not speak Hindi (the national language), who has socially adjusted well to American culture, is learning Spanish, likes to Latin dance and loves meeting people from all over the world, I have assumed a global identity that seems to transcend my Indian identity. I hope that more people are able to step out of their own skins, which would lead us to a far more tolerant, progressive and interactive world. My journey towards this multi-cultural identity would not have been possible had it not been for staff at my undergraduate and graduate institutions, who encouraged me to get involved in diverse experiences. The intercultural competency of staff at universities is therefore of paramount importance in today’s globalized world, seeing how large of an influence they can have on students.
