2008 IHOPS (International House Orientation Peers)

2009 UNDERGRADUATE ORIENTATION INFORMATION

Monday, August 17th and Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Welcome incoming undergraduates and parents/family members!

International House and the IHOPs (International House Orientation Peers) are eager and excited to welcome you to Duke. Undergraduate Orientation is a fun and informative 2-day orientation organized to help you learn about life at Duke while making new friends and getting the "inside" story from your IHOP.

Topics covered will include:

  • US immigration document registration
  • Academic expectations
  • Cross-cultural adjustment
  • Getting involved (clubs, athletics and volunteering)
  • Health and Safety at Duke and in Durham
  • Campus resources

We look forward to meeting you on Monday, August 17th at 9:00am at Brodie Gym, East Campus. 

Make sure to submit your Undergraduate Registration Form for the Orientation by Saturday, August 1, 2009!

Important: If you plan to move into your residence hall early (Saturday, August 15th or Sunday, August 16th) in order to attend International Orientation, you must also complete this registration for Residence Life and Housing Services.

For those students who will be accompanied by their parents/family members, International House will provide a one-day Parent-Family Orientation on Monday, August 17th, 2009.  The orientation will be held in the Richard White Auditorium on East Campus from 9:30am - 3pm. 


INTERNATIONAL HOUSE ORIENTATION PEERS:

International House Orientation Peers (IHOPs) will be very active with the student's and the parent's/family orientation. In addition to being available to answer any questions and/or concerns you or your parents/family may have, they will also organize a restaurant hop for new students on Sunday evening, August 16th.  Meet at East Campus bus stop by 6:30pm if you wish to attend.  Bring $10 - $20 USD for dinner.


Information for Early Move-in: Saturday Aug. 15th and Sunday, Aug. 16th

Saturday, August 15th -- 11:00 am ~ 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm ~ 10:00 pm

Sunday, August 16th   -- 11:00 am ~ 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm ~ 10:00 pm

First-year undergraduate students who attend International Orientation will be allowed to move into their dorm rooms early.  But you must be attending International Orientation.  There is no charge for early move in.  Moving in early to your dorm room will give you the opportunity to unpack;  to become familar with the campus; and to get to know some of your classmates!

The regular move-in date for all new first-year students is Tuesday, August 18th.  It is fine to move-in on this day with the first-year domestic students should you choose to do so. However, if you do not register for early move-in by August 10th 2009, you will have to wait until that Tuesday August 18th to move in.  Also, if you arrive on Monday, August 17th, you will have to wait until Tuesday, August 18th to move in.  That said, we highly recommend you attend International Orientation!


OPTIONAL MEALS:

If you arrive to campus early, there will be a few special meals to attend if you are interested.

1. Saturday, August 15th at 6 pm: Pizza and beverages in the Marketplace on East Campus. Same location as early check-in. Sponsored by Residential Life and Housing Services.

2. Sunday, Auguat 16th at 1 pm: Picnic behind Baldwin Auditorium, near Markham Avenue.  Sponsored by International Students Inc. 

3. Sunday, August 16th at 6:30 pm: Dinner with your IHOPs. Meet at the East Campus bus stop.  Remember to bring between $10-$20 USD to pay for dinner as this meal will be off-campus.

3. Monday, August 17th at 6 pm: Welcome Dinner in the Brodie Gym, East Campus.  President Brodhead will deliver special welcome remarks.  You need to register for this by completing the Undergraduate Registration Form.


TRAVEL INFORMATION:

Via Airplane: Reserve your flight to the Raleigh/Durham International Airport (RDU). Car rentals as well as taxis and van services are available at the airport.

  • If your family has made reservations to stay at the Millennium Hotel, Durham, the Millennium Van will pick you up at the airport. The charge is $15/person or flat family fee of $40 (round trip).  You must inform the Millennium ahead of time that you need pick up service.  Many families stay at the Millennium.  They offer a 20% discount off of their best rate to Duke affiliated folks.  Click here to make a reservation.
  • Taxicab - Follow signs inside the terminal to the taxicab stand. The fare is roughly $35.00 to Duke/Durham. A tip of 10% is normal plus $1 per suitcase. This service is available 24 hours a day.

  • Raleigh-Durham International Airport has just gotten Super Shuttle service which provides transportation from RDU to Duke campus at a less expensive rate than a taxi.  Also, you can book your reservation on-line, prior to arrival.  You (or person booking) must have a credit card to do so.

Additional Information for Early Move-In  

Once you arrive to East Campus you will need to find the Marketplace, located in the East Union Building on East Campus.  Click here for an East Campus map.

Do enter the East Campus from the main entrance, located off Main Street.  Click here for a map of the entire Duke campus.

Standing at the East Campus main bus stop with the bus stop to your back, you will be facing the main quadrangle with the Baldwin Auditorium (dome shaped) located at the very end of quad, opposite or where you are standing.  Walk  or drive towards the buildings on the right.   You will find the Marketplace (which is also called the East Campus Union) to be the third building on your right.  It has columns on the outside. There will be signs posted.  A Residence Life and/or International House staff member will be in the lobby of the Marketplace to check you in and to give you the keys to your residence hall and room.  You will also receive a packet of information which will include the final schedule from the time you arrive through the end of International Orientation.  

 If you have arrived before Monday, August 18th and are staying at a hotel, you should come to the Brodie Gym by 9 am on Monday, August 17th.  A light breakfast will be served and you will meet your I-HOP, as well as many other new students... just like you!  To find where Brodie Gym is located, click here.


FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT REGISTER FOR EARLY MOVE-IN,  regular move-in to the residence halls will take place on Tuesday, August 18th, either in the morning or hte afternoon, depending on where you are living.  Click here to find the schedule for East Campus Move-In on August 18th.

ALSO: Those who ordered linens (bedsheets, blanket,  pillowcase) from Duke will be able to pick up these items during the Early Move-In times stated above.  If you did not or could not order new linens, International House has some linens for you to borrow for the first few nights, until you have an opportunity to purchase your own.  Write us if you need assistance.

NOTE: If you will be under 18 years of age  when you arrive at Duke and you intend to apply for work on campus, you must have a Youth Employment Certificate from the NC Deparment of Labor, and this form must be signed by one of your parents. Print the form and get one parent to sign it. You can fill out other parts after you find a job on campus.
