Department of Motor Vehicle Trips

The International House provides trips to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office in Durham roughly once a month.  The next trip will be on December 11th at 1pm.

We can only accept a limited number of people to ride in the van so YOU MUST RSVP if you want to attend the trip.  Please email craig.smedley@duke.edu


At the DMV you can obtain a North Carolina State ID, a North Carolina Learner's Permit (the written part of the Driver's Exam) or a North Carolina Driver's License.

To obtain the State ID or the Learner's Permit, you MUST bring the following items:

Social Security Card (If you have been assigned a Social Security number, please bring your original Social Security card)

Your Passport

I-20 or DS-2019

An official piece of mail with your Durham or Chapel Hill STREET address on it (for example a letter from your bank or utility company)NOTE: If you are an undergraduate, you will need to go to the HOUSING OFFICE at 218 Alexander Avenue to obtain a copy of your Duke address.  This paper will serve as your Durham address.

$15.00 cash or check

To obtain a NC License, you will need all of the items above plus: an automobile AND proof of automobile insurance in YOUR name
