INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS PROGRAM:
The goal of the program is to promote friendship and culture exchange between local citizens and Duke's international population by pairing locals with incoming internationals. Local citizens may wish to learn more about another country, reconnect with a country in which they have lived or traveled, or assist someone settling in to life in Durham. Internationals may wish to learn about U.S. and local culture, customs, traditions and daily life.
LOOKING FOR INTERESTED AND COMMITTED COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR THE 2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR...
Commitment: Assignment to one or more partner(s) is for one academic year. However, many participants maintain contact, long after the formal period has ended.
Sign Up: People interested in participating in this program must fill out an application form . Please note that we cannot guarantee that you will be matched but we will match as many people as possible.
Matching: Applicants are matched based on interests. Once partners are sent each other's contact information they are expected to contact each other and arrange a convenient time and place to meet.
Read the following carefully:
- I understand that matching is based on similar hobbies or interests.
- I understand that this program only matches people for cross-cultural friendships.
- I will respect the culture, religion, beliefs and customs of my match and will make NO attempts to proselytize or recruit for religious or other groups.
- I understand that my responsibilities include contacting my match via phone and/or e-mail, meeting with my match on a monthly basis, completing an evaluation, and telling the coordinator of any concerns and/or problems regarding the match or program.
- I understand that if I sign up for more than one program (International Friends Program, Holiday Host and/or Duke Language Partners) that I may be matched for one program only.
- I understand that it is possible I will not be matched if the program is full.
- I understand that I will be placed on a special e-mail list: intlprograms (with the option of being off), which will inform me of upcoming intercultural and international activities and programs at Duke and in the Durham community on a weekly basis.
