Housing
- Does International House offer short-term accommodations for international students and scholars while they look for a place to live?
Unfortunately, International House is an office and not a place to live. We have put together an information sheet on furnished, temporary housing as well as several hotels within walking distance to the university.
For your first week here, we actually recommend staying at a place like the Homestead Studio Suites. The Studio Suites are furnished with kitchenettes and located one block away from a grocery store, so one can easily cook. There is a free shuttle van to Duke every weekday morning and afternoon.
If you are really short on cash, you can contact your department to inquire about staying with another graduate student or postdoc for your first few days. Or, one could always post a message to intlhouse@duke.edu to see if someone could put you up on his or her couch for a few days until you find permanent housing. Many people are now setting up their housing prior to their arrival to Duke.
Do check out our website for lots of tips about housing and much, much more! http://ihouse.studentaffairs.duke.edu/services/orientain/moving/index.html
Or contact us with any questions and/or concerns you may have. (ihouse@duke.edu)
- How many international students live at International House?
- International House, unlike what its name suggests, is not a house but an office where our six staff members, student workers and volunteers work Monday through Friday 8:30am - 5pm. After these hours you might see our only resident: Gautham Pandiyan who is our Resident Manager. Additionally, International House can be used for parties, social events or any occasions and many individuals and groups use International House during and after our office hours! For more details or questions about using the I-House please send us an email.
